One of the most magical experiences I’ve had is venturing into the heart of Eastern Europe, particularly the captivating landscapes and rich culture of Romania. When most people think of traveling to Eastern Europe, destinations like Prague or Budapest often come to mind. While these cities are undeniably wonderful, Romania offers a refreshing blend of history, natural beauty, and authenticity that’s hard to resist. Here are a few reasons to consider a trip to Romania:
I kicked off my adventure in Bucharest, Romania's capital city. Flying into Henri Coandă International Airport, the vibe was instantly inviting. I took a taxi to my hotel, Hotel Cismigiu, located near the city center. The hotel’s combination of modern luxury and historical charm set the perfect tone for my stay.
Over the next few days, I immersed myself in the city's vibrant atmosphere. Exploring Old Town, I wandered through cobblestone streets lined with charming cafes, shops, and historical buildings. One evening, I stumbled upon a traditional restaurant serving sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls) and mămăligă (polenta). The flavors were incredible, and it was the perfect way to experience local cuisine.
After soaking up the sights and sounds of Bucharest, I made my way to the heart of Transylvania. I took the train from Bucharest to Brașov, a picturesque medieval town surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. Arriving in Brașov felt like stepping into a fairytale.
The first stop was the iconic Black Church, which dates back to the 14th century. I was captivated by its Gothic architecture and intricate interior. As luck would have it, I visited during a choir rehearsal, and the melodious voices amplified the church's ethereal beauty.
No trip to Transylvania would be complete without a visit to Bran Castle, often referred to as Dracula's Castle. Located a short drive from Brașov, this medieval fortress is steeped in legends. I arrived early to avoid the crowds, giving me ample time to explore its narrow corridors and learn about its intriguing history.
Standing on the castle’s balcony, I marveled at the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests. Though the connection to Dracula is tenuous, the castle is enchanting, and you can easily get lost in its eerie tales.
While in Transylvania, I also ventured into the Carpathians. I headed to Piatra Craiului National Park, famous for its stunning hiking trails and biodiversity. I joined a guided group hike to explore the scenic ridge.
The hike was demanding but rewarded me with panoramic views of jagged peaks and lush valleys. Along the way, we spotted various wildlife, including chamois and brown bears. Our guide shared fascinating information about the local flora and fauna, enriching the experience. The thrill of reaching the summit was exhilarating.
Next on my itinerary was the charming city of Sibiu, known for its colorful buildings and rich cultural heritage. Just a few hours from Brașov, Sibiu felt more laid-back, with its picturesque squares and cobblestone streets inviting me to explore.
I began my day by visiting the Brukenthal Palace, which houses a fascinating art collection. The history of Sibiu is showcased beautifully throughout its museums and local markets. I spent an afternoon wandering through the Great Square, soaking up the atmosphere with a coffee in hand while listening to local musicians.
In the evening, I dined at a local eatery where I tried a traditional dish called cozonac, a sweet bread filled with nuts and cocoa. The flavors danced on my tongue, and I couldn’t get enough.
As my Romanian adventure continued, I traveled to Maramureș, a region known for its picturesque wooden churches and traditional way of life. The moment I arrived, it felt as if time stood still. I stayed in a rustic guesthouse run by a warm family who offered to cook for me.
One of the highlights was visiting the Merry Cemetery of Sapanta, known for its colorful tombstones, each depicting the life story of the deceased through witty verses and vibrant imagery. It's a unique manifestation of Romanian culture, highlighting the people’s humorous approach to life and death.
During my stay, I participated in a traditional weaving workshop where I learned the art of crafting beautiful textiles. Engaging with the locals, I absorbed stories of their customs and lifestyles, gaining a deeper appreciation for their rich heritage.
My journey culminated with a visit to Romania's Black Sea coast. Traveling to Mamaia was my opportunity to unwind at the beach. Soaking up the sun and savoring fresh seafood at a beachside restaurant brought my adventure to a relaxed close.
One night, I strolled along the beach while the sun set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a moment of reflection as I savored the memories of my Romanian adventure.
